Understanding how your existing house was built is critical to keeping any modifications cost effective. By ensuring any additional loads added to your home work with the existing structure will reduce expensive structural changes to your existing home.
LINE IT UP
If you are adding another level to your house, the most cost effective way to do it is to line up your addition with the existing building below. This is not always possible due to council restrictions, but if it can be done it is a great way to reduce costs.
KNOW WHAT YOU WANT

WORK WITH WHAT YOU HAVE
Keeping your bathroom and kitchens in their existing locations is a great way to minimise costs, especially if your home is built on a concrete slab.
KNOW YOUR BUDGET
Know what you are comfortable to spend will help your architect advise you of what is possible and how far you may be able to take the renovation. knowing your budget also helps with priritising your needs. The pool may not make the cut, or maybe it can if the exterior is just given a little less attention.
KNOWING WHEN TO STOP
The hardest part of any renovation is your new elements will look amazing, and can leave the existing, untouched items with a little bit to be desired. Understanding how far you wish to go and how much you can spend is critical. Sometimes if so much of the home is changing, starting again my give freedoms that a renovation may not, and on occasion starting from scratch can be cheaper.
